You cannot take a Dental Hygienist Program at a 4-Year Academic University. Dental Hygiene is a trade, not academic. You can only take is as a Certificate program or at a 2 year Community College. Puffs is incorrect - if you are attending a Community College, you do not need to take an additional 2 years of general education and sciences courses. Only one or two science courses as part of the program.

Moon Hi, i am actually in a dental hygiene program at a 4 Year Acedemic University. I would advise you to go to a dental hygiene program at a 4 year university as it will give you a BA (Bachelors) degree. I had read through what puffs had said regarding how pre-req courses work and getting into a dental hygiene program also works and all the information that he had provided is actually correct because that is how it was for me. Dental Hygiene programs are not a "walk in and start the school" type of program. Students must complete 16 credit hours of science courses, (pre-requisetes) before you are able to apply to a dental hygiene program. Once you complete those courses, which does normally take about 1.5 years - 2 years to complete, you will be able to get into the dental hygien program. Yes the program is 2 years at both community and 4 year University schools. I would highly reccomend you to go through the dental hygiene program at a 4 year univeristy, as i am, so that you can get your Bachelors degree.
