If it has an amplifier built into it, it does not use any power from the receiver.

Just about all subwoofers in the market have a built in power amplifier and does not to use the receiver power amplifier to produce the sound. Providing that it is not a subwoofer that came as a part of a package from a home theater in a box. Hope this will help you out.
