You don't want to cook on a bonfire (too large and too difficult to control) but consider a smaller campfire. You can cook many things in foil (potatoes, other root vegetables, corn). You can use a grill over the top and broil meat. You can make cobbler in a Dutch oven. There are stews and soups which turn out nicely in cast iron pots. By barbecue I gather you mean "cooking meat" (grilling) not the real definition (the slow cooking of meat using a fire's heat and/or smoke). Use a steel grill that can be suspended (either by legs or hanging) above the heat.
