The gel memory foam mattresses are manufactured by fusing gel particles, such as you find in orthopaedic shoe inserts, with visco foam. This means the mattress retains less heat which was a problem with ordinary memory foam mattresses, whilst still offering the same solid sleep experience. According to Sealy, and most other gel memory foam manufacturers, the mattresses are anti-microbial, anti-dustmite and hypoallergenic. They also tend to come with very long guarantees. Although you can spot clean the mattress with a damp sponge and mild detergent that does not contain bleach it is probably still a good idea to get a mattress protector. A thin waterproof one is probably the best.
