The other poster gave you good advice, but I would also use chlorine bleach to disinfect it after washing it the first time--then let it dry outside in the sunlight. Spoiled meat can leave bacteria. The bleach will kill that--the vanilla will not. The vanilla is a good way to leave it without that "bleach" odor afterwards, though.
