You keep her away from male dogs from the start of her showing signs of being heat until about a month later, just to be safe. then you spay her.

You need to keep any male Dog away from her at least 3 weeks but i would actually make sure it was 4 weeks to be on the safe side .

Just to be on the safe side, she should be kept away from any intact males for a full 4 weeks from the onset of her heat cycle. Even though the normal cycle is usually 21 days/3 weeks, b*tches have been know to stand to be bred even on day 21. If you don't want to be bothered to keep her away from all intact males for a full 4 weeks, then have her spayed and be done with it forever.

The entire time the dog is in season. 3 weeks minimum. A female in season will drive the male insane for the entire time. He doens't care that she is not willing to breed for the entire time, he just wants to NOW. Males can stop eating, get very vocal, and very distructive.

Spay her - she won't bleed, you won't have to keep her away from other dogs. It's just that simple. And for the record - same as people, schedules don't always matter. What "should" happen or not happen doesn't necessarily happen or not happen.
