It's the same as every game of the series, save for the spin-off games. Every generation of Pokémon came in 2 games. Either games had exclusive content you couldn't find in the other game. This encouraged players to seek out other players and trade with them to gain those things they couldn't themselves, sharing the adventure and experience and also make new friends with common interests. The main goal is to capture all the Pokémon, which is impossible unless you have those of the game you don't have that are exclusive to that game. Most players buy 1 game and make friends by looking for those who have the other game. It's all about the social interaction between players. Of course, you can buy both games but you will always need 2 consoles to trade between them.
