This is something of a guess and if I'm wrong, I welcome being corrected. My guess is that the recording function in the TV includes HDCP protection, like in a DVR or DVD recorder. It prevents unauthorized recording to external media (like a USB drive) of copyrighted programming. In lieu of HDCP circuitry, the designers may simply solve the issue by preventing *any* transfer of a recorded program to external media. A further guess, since I'm not familiar with your TV model, is that the USB jack is an input port only, at least for program material. You can't get program video out of it. Hopefully, someone else has a more definitive answer for you.
