get a leather card holder, add dummy plastic credit size cards to make it rigid. They are not that sensitive to phones or metal, but flexing will wreck them. Description sounds like you have an oyster as well - Oyster can hold PAGY and monthly travelcard so you only need the one card.

You can get that monthly ticket added to your Oyster Card - why bother with a separate cardboard one?

I used to use three-monthly Travelcards to get to and from work, and I used to have the same problem. It seems to me to have been just a case of wear and tear - after about a month of being put through ticket barriers at least twice a day - and often more - it would fail to work. Getting it replaced was fortunately very easy - I just went to a LT ticket office, and they issue you a new one immediately. However, as another answerer says, if you get the travelcard loaded onto your Oyster card you should have no more problems, as you only ever have to touch the card - still inside its plastic wallet - onto the reader of buses and ticket barriers.
