He probably got a dishonorable discharge instead. In the civilian world your friend can not get civilian jail time but under the uniform code of military justice he could have gotten military jail or prison time. In getting a dishonorable discharged your friend forfeits his VA medical and education benefits. It can hurt him if he applies to a local, state, or federal civil service job in the future. Most times the military busts a person in rank, pay and fines then for going AWOL, then dishonorably discharges them. Yes, the local cops can arrest a person for military deserting or for going AWOL. Source:Sometimes LMDC housed a person that went AWOL from the military. And yes they stayed until the CID came to pick them up. :)
