I don't know how it would work with trees but you can preserve flowers with silica gel. You lay the flower in a partly filled plastic container of silica gel. Then sprinkle more on top until it's completely covered. The tissues of the flower gradually dry out and are preserved in a state that they were in before burying in the gel. Then you can do what you wish with it. Perhaps try a few small branches and then make a dry arrangement with them. You can buy dried flowers at most craft stores and the silica gel so perhaps you could ask them if drying trees is possible. As I said it may not work with trees but it does work with flowers so it is worth a try. Other than that I know of no other way to preserve a tree.
