Your best first mod is to swap to 4.10 gears, then get stickier tires. Reprogram the transmission computer to shift more aggressively would help also, as would a higher stall torque converter. After that, work on the engine. Start with the basic stuff of a cold air intake and cat-back exhaust. When you have the money, get a good top end kit (cam, heads, intake manifold) and some headers and get a good tune. At that point you should have 350+hp at the wheels and with a 2500-3000 stall converter and 4.10s, you'll walk most cars on the road.

how fast does you wallet want to go? if its a c4 or aod auto you can shift kit them and swap out the gear sets in the diff. start with the basics, camshaft, carb and injection and exhaust and computer chip upgrades. if you still have a hankering to go faster, then you will have to open the motor and do a performance rebuild.

Cheapest way to improve 0-60 is to change rear differential to 3.73 or even 4.10. The bigger the number the faster the acceleration. Also it is normally cheaper to cut weight than add power. After that intake, can, and exhaust. Eventually your wallet will limit how fast you can go
