It's a motor fuel, primarily. It does not require petroleum for its manufacture (although in most places it is entirely dependent on petroleum for harvesting and processing of the oil crop). I suspect it could also be used as a heating fuel in an appropriately modified oil heater. DK

Technically diesel is a resource, bio diesel is a renewable resource. It can be use as a fuel source in all areas of life. Check out Jatropha curcas, it is a plant which is being use primarily for bio diesel.

It is a combustible fuel, used in the same types of engines as ordinary diesel fuel. While ordinary diesel is made from petroleum, biodiesel is made from vegetable oil. Like any diesel, it can be used to run vehicles, electric generators, furnaces, etc. The question of whether it is a practical resource depends on other factors, such as the price of producing it versus the price of producing petroleum-based diesel.
