Phone the employer helpline - number on the letter that came with the software. By the way - do you realy mean someone earning £20000 in one month?

You have taxable pay of £20,000 in the year so far. A code of 810L = £8,109 allowances for the year. This is month 9 so allowances so far are £8,109 x 9/12 = £6,081.75 (rounded to £6,081.84 by HMRC's use of the free pay tax tables). That leaves £13,918.16 to be taxed at 20% = £2,783.60. All these column numbers relate to the form P11 Working Sheet - an old friend of mine, which I got used to using to do these calculations manually when I ran a small payroll.
