because on High def TV, non high def shows look bad...

Your tv will only display what is being feed to it. Did you also include HD program with your cable service, if not then you are not going to get HD pictures. On the initial set up, did you have the tv scan for all the tv channel available ? This will take about 15 mintues for the tv to do. You can find the instruction manual to do this on your owners manual. Hope this will help you out.
