Sounds wacky to me. Unless you are trying to plug in a foreign cell charger.

What? Never heard of anything like that. Now Lightening strike could cause damage but exploding... Something is really wrong to cause something to explode other then the stove. Also stove is usually on its own circuit which makes it doubly doubtful that the stove did anything. If I were your friend I would find a real electrician to see what is happening. In the meantime check with insurance agent to see if damage covered.

I'm with Bond and Marduk on this one. Sounds really strange to me. Even if you were trying to use a charger. different charger.

Electric water heater? That would explain the power jumps but more likely the refrigerator is coming on. 12 amps is about what a freezer or refrigerator compressor will draw. About the cell phone exploding the best solution here is to have a qualified professional electrician do an inspection. In other words it is unlikely.
