I've seen a lot of gliders "hangared" in their own trailer. It's relatively quick and easy to remove the wings and just store the aircraft in it's own custom built trailer when not in use. You don't NEED to take off from an airport, but where else are you going to get the tow that is required to launch your glider? The little airplane that they use to tow your glider up into the air DOES need to take off from an airport.
