it depends upon that resident's preferences. My Dad is Japanese, so he prefers that I take my shoes off when I enter. My Korean friend also requested that I remove my footwear. so, if all else fails, ask.

I do anyway. The only time I wouldn't is if they have hardwood floors, they are wearing shoes themselves and your feet reek.

If the persons ask you to then be polite and do so. Now if not then wise is to wipe your shoes off on the mat before entering. So always have socks on.
