a heat pump is a bad idea in new Hampshire. they are usually installed in mild climates. the electric heat that backs up the heat pump is inefficient and expensive to run. have you considered coming up above the floor in an adjacent room and cutting a register into the wall of the room that's on a slab? if its in the middle of your living room that's obviously not practical, but if you can find the corner of a closet or a utility room, it might not be bad. you can always box around the duct in wood and sheetrock for a finished look.
