Not likely they died. Fir and pine trees require this cold stratification process. Freezing happens in nature. Your seeds will probably germinate just fine--once it's time for them to grow.

They should be OK. Think about them growing in the wild where they can get a very long period of extremely cold weather. As soon as the spring comes and temperatures rise they will germinate. No need to put them in the sun u less you want to begin the germination process.
