Each flag state issues what is called "The Minimum Manning Certificate" This states the minimum crew required to be carried. The exact number will depend on the size of the ship and its trading pattern. Short sea traders will have less than ocean going ships. The usual crew for a short sea trader is 6 men; Capt. Mate, Engineer, 2 AB's and a cook/AB. An Ocean going ship will generally have in the region of 14 crew reqquired. The exact number will be dependent on wether the ships engine room is fully automatic, (UMS) or manual. Hving said the above most ocean going cargo ships will have a crew in the region of 22 men. Made up of the Master, Mate, 2nd mate and 3rd mate. Ch. Engineer, 2nd Eng, 3rd Eng, 4th Eng and Electrical Off. Bosun, 3 AB's and 3 OS. 3 Motormmen/Greasers and 1 fitter. Finally Cook and steward. The time that they stay onboard will be dependent on the shipping company, but for senior officers this is usually 3 to 4 months, Junior officers abour 6 months and crew members about 9 months. You will find that the above times do vary depending on the company and on the nationality of the crew.
