$70 per week is plenty - you can easily afford beans, pasta, rice, and green / yellow vegetables for $10 per day. The $30 per week budget is a bit more challenging. Here are some ideas: 1. At low-cost markets, $1 or $2 can often buy a 10 pound bag of potatoes. 2. Bulk pinto beans are usually priced less than $1 per pound. 3. Bulk rice is also usually priced less than $1 per pound 4. Carrots and mustard greens are among the least expensive (and most nutritious) of all green / yellow vegetables 5. Shop at budget markets, rather than at national chain markets like Vons or Ralphs 6. Asian markets have amazingly low prices on fruit and vegetables 7. Hispanic markets have amazingly low prices on beans and rice
