It depends on what TV and what speakers your talking about many HDTV's only have an optical out connection; if that is the case then the powered speakers would need an optical in port; its rare that a speaker has an optical in port but there are a few like the Behringer MS-40...but it also depends on what TV and what type of audio out connections it has....

More than likely no. If the speaker you have is a powered one and the tv has an earphone jack then you can. Most tv tv only provides you with an optical audio output. this is a digital signal that is mainly encode by Dolby Digital and has to be decoded by a Dolby Digital decoder. The decode is mainly available in the AVR, home theater in a box with an optical audio input or a sound bar. Hope this will help you out.
