no windows updates your whole computer. you can't just pick and choose which parts you do and do not want

No. you would need to risk destroying everything on it by installing as dual boot, then select whichever system you want to use as the machine starts. And why anyone would want to install Windows 8 with all its' problems and lack of flexibility over Windows 7 install I don't know. Everyone I know who has bought a machine with 8 loaded has then gone and bought 7 to re-install it.

You can dual boot it. It can be complicated but if you want to run both it may be worth it.

yes you can easily run them both... just install virtual box its free Google it. install the windows 8 inside of it and voila'
