Perfectly fine as long as you keep it appropriate. But don't try to build a friendship with them; that's just weird. But being friendly is different. Go for it. And if it gets awkward, who cares? She's on a different continent

For us, we need to wait until we graduate, even if they aren't our teacher anymore. I tried when this happened to me, but the teacher ignored me, and when she called my mom and said sorry I'm ignoring your daughter but I have to wait until she is out of high school. You can message her if you like, I'm sure she'd appreciate it, just be careful, and don't take offense if she doesn't reply. Good luck.
