What timbo, said a bad maf sensor will car idle problems, but not sure about the car turning off, i do know a major intake leak will shut the car off. Check all the connections going from the air filter to the throttle body. A %100 sure way to tell if its the maf sensor is to simply unplug the maf sensor. The car will go into limp mode (run rich) and if the idle problems go away its the maf sensor. My car had the maf sensor go bad when i was close to my house and wouldnt even move. I unplugged it and drove it home and when i installed the new maf sensor all was good. Also e36 btw.
